Networking: A practical guide with Nick Davies

Having delivered networking training to many thousands of people throughout the UK, I know that almost everyone shares the same concerns and worries:

• How to break in to a group.
• How to move on from the dull.
• How to remember names and
• How to follow up without being seen as needy.

And so, in the time allotted I will make sure that the delegates have some tips and techniques they can use right away to improve these areas.

In addition, I will introduce the key elements of networking, which include:

• The first impression
• Small talk
• Listening
• Body language 

During the session I will have the delegates up on their feet, mixing, mingling and talking to each other about their favourite films, books, holidays or foods, in order that they can indulge in some small talk and practice some of the stuff I’ve been talking about.

I’ll finish off with a cracking little story about how networking got me my break in to law.

Trainers will be more effective at building internal relationships which means they will find it easier to raise their profile and that of their departments and thus find it easier to get people on board regarding training. Bingo!
 
 
Session Objectives

I will deal with each one of these in turn.

First impressions:
The way you look, what you are wearing, how you walk, eye contact and smiling.

Small talk:
Why small talk is so vital. What subjects are OK and what are not, when to switch to business talk and business small talk.

Listening:
Passive, active and selective listening: what’s the difference how to listen properly and how to tell if you are being heard.

Body language:
What our body is doing communicates more about us than the words coming from our mouths do. What about personal space and handshakes? In this part, we’ll be looking at the dos and don’ts as well as the negative and the positive.
 
 
About Nick

Nick is a tall, very well dressed Mancunian and Blue Peter badge winner, who lives with his wife and 2 kids just outside Edinburgh.

Nick’s background is in law and business. He has been a sales rep, flogged shoes for Russell & Bromley for 6 years, where he counted David Beckham and Vera Duckworth as regular customers, has been a director of 2 limited companies and even practised as a barrister for a short while.

Now running his own training company, he travels the country, teaching lawyers and business people, how to pitch, present, network, sell and persuade. In the past 18 months his clients have included: Allen & Overy, BLP, Capsticks, D.A.S. Insurance, Halliwells, HAYS HR, Linklaters, Manchester International Airport, Mills & Reeve, Olswang, Pearl Group, Sorainen, Standard Life and Tyco Electronics.

As well as training Nick also performs stand-up and delivers after-dinner speeches. Over the past few years he has worked and shared stages with a buffet of reasonably well-known people; including: The Rt. Hon. Michael Portillo, Sir Digby Jones, Jenny Bond, Kate Adie, Roger Black MBE, Max Clifford, Alan Hansen and Alastair Campbell.

Whilst he has absolutely no TV or radio credits to his name he did once feature in a 1977 Granada TV documentary about the demise of the corner shop, in which he had to run in to his local grocers and buy a loaf of medium white sliced. He does not golf.
