Trainers' Conference 2012 - Workshop Hosts

Workshop Host - Paul Kearns

Workshop title: The Best Learning Design Starts with Evaluation

Evaluation gets a bad press for being a soulless subject that’s only of interest to the ‘inner-nerd’ but Paul Kearns demonstrates how it is actually the wellspring of all learning and when used appropriately, as part of the needs analysis and design phases of learning, it satisfies all stakeholders simultaneously and encourages a continuous cycle of learning and personal development. It can also be fun!

The Workshop:

Paul’s not sure whether it was just in his mother’s milk, a genetic mutation or simply his naturally sceptical personality that was the source of his interest in evaluation from the very first day of his very first training management job, back in 1983. So when he started to specialise in the subject, in 1991, he was eager to show training, development and learning professionals just what they were missing by ignoring or incorrectly applying the very simple principles of evaluation to their learning efforts. He has since written widely on the subject of evaluation and ROI, including the CIPD’s own textbook "Evaluating the ROI from Learning" and his 12-part series on the role of 'Learning Consultants' for Training Journal, which was described by its Editor as '... without doubt one of the best pieces of editorial we have published'.

There is just one key lesson from Paul’s workshop - evaluation models usually try to put a value on training after the event rather than use it to ensure, right from the beginning, that the training is based on a business priority, the need is accurately identified, the target audience is well-chosen and eager to learn, the learning experience is well designed and the delivery method appropriate. In short, evaluation and ROI are all about learning design that brings greater credibility and customer satisfaction to training departments that know how to get the best out of them.

About Paul

Paul has over 30 years experience in training, development and learning as a training manager, trainer and consultant and takes a very practical and pragmatic approach to making sure training spend is always seen as an investment with a great return. Paul established his PWL consultancy company in 1991, after working in a range of HR and training roles in engineering and manufacturing, in order to specialise in the fields of measurement and evaluation, or what is now generally referred to as Evidence-Based HR. He has since taught his ‘Baseline System’ method around the world including Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, China and Australia. He is now a prime mover in the Evidence-Based Management Movement (EBM) and is working with the American Society for HRM Taskforce set up to look at human capital measures that are of real interest to investors.

Workshop Host - Gill Neish

Workshop title: The Eye of the Storm

An opportunity to see and discuss the award winning film of Jane Elliott, the American diversity champion, conducting the ‘blue eyes, brown eyes’ exercise and to consider the implications for each one of us today.

Session Objectives:

During this short session, you will have a chance to:

  • Recognise racist behaviour based on eye colour in ‘The Eye of the Storm’ DVD.
  • Draw parallels between the racist behaviours based on eye-colour in the DVD and the racist behaviours based on skin colour (and with discriminatory treatment because of other ‘isms’) because of power inequalities in society.
  • Recognise the effects discriminatory treatment has on us all and understand how it can lead to negative behaviours which re-inforce prejudice against people from less powerful groups.
  • Consider your own role in challenging discrimination and creating an environment in which diversity is valued.

About Gill

Gillian Neish is a training consultant. She works with an organisation’s most important and valuable resource - its people, helping them to recognise their potential and to believe in their ability to make a positive difference. The focus of her work is power, whether challenging the power inequalities of racism, sexism and the other ‘isms’ or developing personal power through personal development programmes.

Gillian works with Jane Elliott, the international facilitator and lecturer who developed the ‘blue-eyed, brown-eyed’ discrimination exercise. She now conducts the exercise here in the UK, providing an experiential opportunity for participants to understand the impact of power inequalities.

Central to all Gillian’s work is her commitment to anti-oppressive practice and to making equality a reality. Her courses encourage people to think beyond stereotypes and accept the reality that there are as many differences in any one group as in any other group (even their own group, however they choose to define their group). In a challenging but non-threatening way, she enables participants to explore the nature and impact of power inequalities in society and to develop practical strategies to eliminate discrimination and value diversity.

Workshop title: Influence and Persuasion:
The Art of Letting Them Have Your Way

Once upon a time, when princesses slept on peas and Goldilocks broke in to houses belonging to woodland creatures and ruined their furniture, it was alright to bark orders at people and expect them to do as they were told and then not have to settle out of court for an undisclosed sum when they didn't like it.

Well, no longer.

People are far more likely to answer with "Why do you want me to do that?" rather than ask "What do you want me to do next?"

Being able to influence and persuade others to either, embark on a course of action, adopt a new way of working or simply attend one of your training courses are vital for success in your role.

Whilst he has absolutely no TV or radio credits to his name he did once feature in a 1977 Granada TV documentary about the demise of the corner shop, in which he had to run in to his local grocers and buy a loaf of medium white sliced. He does not golf.

Workshop title: Rewind. Fact, Fantasy or Fad?

Is it really possible to overcome a fear simply by changing the way you think about it?

In this workshop you’ll learn about the Rewind Technique which allows you to review and remove/resolve problem memories for yourself and to do the same with others.

We’ll consider some of the evidence for its efficacy and leave you to decide if it works or not through trying it out for yourself. There will be no pressure on anyone to join in – though I hope some of you will want to have a go. Just come along, enjoy the ideas and make up your own mind.

About Clare

Clare has spent a lifetime learning new things, usually just for the heck of it, and has always been willing to give things a go. Some years ago she cured herself of a fear of flying through self-hypnosis and this inspired her to spend two years training as a Hypnotherapist. From there she moved into (and out of again!) NLP, training first as a Practitioner and later as a Master Therapist and then explored and trained in many therapeutic ideas ranging from the strangely weird (but rather satisfying) Emotional Freedom Technique to the even odder Kinesthesiology. Along the way she’s explored the case against these techniques too.

If there’s one thing she now knows it’s that changing your mind isn’t as simple as making it up in the first place – but it’s the key to a healthy approach to life and to learning. (Until she changes her mind again, of course…) As Richard Bach said in Illusions 'I don't know they're true, I believe them because it's fun to believe them.'

She works now with individuals and groups to help them overcome fears, manage stress, improve their confidence and generally enjoy life more. And she’s well aware of the power of the placebo effect.

Workshop Host - Nicki Davey

Workshop title: Breathing and Voice

Maintaining a calm but authoritative presence is essential when training and presenting. In this workshop we’ll learn how to use breathing techniques to help us to stay calm and focused, centred and balanced, and how to sound great by using voice projection, resonance and pitch effectively.

Once the techniques have been mastered, we’ll put them into practice and explore their impact by singing together. We’ll sing simple songs and chants to explore how we can use our voices and to really connect and communicate with each other. No-one will have to sing on their own and any fears about singing will be dispelled – an ideal way to overcome self-limiting beliefs (“I can’t sing”). We’ll create a joyous sound and generate a wonderful energy.

Breathing properly improves our physical and mental health by detoxifying inner organs, promoting blood flow and digestion, increasing oxygen supply to the brain and muscles, as well as improving concentration and reducing stress. Singing together as a group is wonderfully uplifting, creates a powerful sense of collective enjoyment, promotes listening, communication and co-operation and reduces stress and tension. You’ll therefore benefit not only from valuable techniques for training and presenting, but you are guaranteed to feel great afterwards.

We’ll also explore the learning from this experience, and how this can be applied within a training environment with suggestions for simple activities to incorporate into training.

Workshop title: Icebreakers are so 2010 -
"LaunchPads" are the Next Best Thing!

"Matt is a highly creative and dynamic individual who made a valuable contribution to our Trainers' Library Conference in 2009. (…) taking his experience as a professional tennis coach and applying it to business in an interactive, fun and thought provoking way"

For 2012 the challenge is how to find an endless supply of new icebreakers, that are not only energising, but are also linked to your training topic so that from the start people are getting into the right frame of mind for your session.

Do you (and your teams) dread the icebreaker moment? Do all your sessions begin the same? Everyone dreading when it’s his or her turn? Do the icebreakers seem to be a random separate item at the start of a session with no relevance to the topic, and everything else you do that day?

Do you just wish you had more icebreakers and energisers at your disposal? Then this workshop is for you!

In this workshop Matt takes some key training topics and shares a range of relevant “LaunchPads” that you can take straight into your next training session. You will also be shown the tools to use your own creativity to create an endless supply of new "LaunchPads" to keep your sessions fresh, fun and energised!

Workshop title: Merlin's Magic

Many people know me as one of Glasstap's co-founders. Fewer know of my lifelong love for horses, which dates back to my childhood, when each Saturday morning I'd avidly await the start of Champion the Wonder Horse! (I always believed Champion was a black horse - he wasn't, it's just that my parents only had a black and white television.)

I finally realised my dream of learning to ride and owning a horse as a thirty-something in 2002. In July 2011, I took the dream a step further, when I bought a previously unhandled three year old, who I've named Merlin, and embarked on the adventure of training him using natural horsemanship and positive horsemanship techniques. Not only was this something I'd never attempted before - until that time I'd never even had any contact with an unbacked horse. The journey that followed (and which continues) has been the most fulfilling experience of my life.

In this workshop, I'll use video and discussion to explore that journey and identify what we can learn from working with horses that we can apply to developing and leading people. I ran this session for the first time in December 2011 to a group of people that found it inspiring and genuinely thought provoking - I hope you do too.
